Victoria will have its first publicly owned windfarm after the government’s electricity commission spent $650m on a 33-turbine project in the Latrobe valley.

Construction of the Delburn windfarm is due to start in early 2026 and climate advocates said the purchase of the project by the State Electricity Commission marked a key turning point for a region known for its privately owned coal plants.

Britain’s energy system operator has predicted that this year’s Christmas Day could be the greenest yet.

If the weather remains mild and windy for the rest of December, the National Energy System Operator (Neso) has said it could record the lowest carbon intensity – the measure of how much carbon dioxide is released to produce electricity – recorded on the network for 25 December.

The cost of generating electricity in an Australian grid powered by 82% renewable energy would be a third cheaper than current wholesale electricity costs, according to new CSIRO analysis.

The organisation has for the first time modelled the likely cost of electricity generation from different combinations of technology that could make up Australia’s grid in 2030 and 2050. Previous work has only looked at the comparative costs of individual technologies.
